Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability of a couple to become pregnant after one year of not using any birth control during frequent sexual intercourse. Infertility affects both men and women equally.

There are many safe and effective ways to improve your chances of getting pregnant. Close to 90% of all infertility cases are treated with either medication or surgery.

How do doctors test for infertility?

Dr. Sayago uses a variety of methods to determine the cause of your infertility. Some of the procedures include blood work and semen analysis, along with several other options.

Hysterosalpingogram testing

X-ray contrast gets injected into your uterus, and Dr. Sayago takes an X-ray to determine if the cavity is normal and ensure the fluid spills out of your fallopian tubes.

Sonohystogram

While lying down with your knees bent, Dr. Sayago places a slim wand called an ultrasound transducer in your vagina, as well as a saline-filled catheter into your cervix.

The saline fluid helps the ultrasound form an image with sharper detail. Your health care provider can use this information to diagnose several different health conditions.

Exploratory Laparoscopy

This is a minimally invasive surgery where Dr. Sayago makes a small incision beneath your navel and inserts a thin viewing device so she can examine your fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus. A laparoscopy helps identify:

  • Endometriosis
  • Scarring
  • Blockages
  • Irregularities in your fallopian tubes
  • Problems with the ovaries and uterus

How is infertility treated?

Once Dr. Sayago determines the cause of your infertility, she uses several different treatments in an attempt to get you pregnant.  Some of the methods Dr. Sayago uses include:

Ovulatory medication

Depending on the medication, these either regulate or induce ovulation.

Follicle tracking by ultrasound

This test measures the size of any active follicles in your ovaries that can contain an egg. Accurately predicts ovulation or how many follicles are present and when egg extraction is best performed.

Artificial insemination

Dr. Sayago places your partner’s washed and concentrated sperm directly in your uterus around the time of ovulation to improve your odds of fertilization.

Notes:  please use the following as a reference: Infertility is the inability of a couple to become pregnant (regardless of cause) after 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse (using no birth control methods). Infertility affects about 6.1 million people in the United States, about 10% of men and women of reproductive age. Infertility affects men and women equally. Most infertility cases (85-90%) are treated with medication or surgery.

Our physicians are able to perform patient infertility testing and treatment such as:

  • Blood work, semen, and HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) testing
  • SHG (Sonohystogram)
  • Exploratory Laparoscopy
